OneDrive on Windows: Check Sync Before Disconnecting

Before stopping OneDrive sync, identify which files exist locally and which are online-only. Pausing, unlinking, uninstalling, and deleting cloud files are different actions.

Inventory the files you need

  1. Open the OneDrive folder and review the availability status of important files.
  2. Make an independent copy of essential work and confirm that it opens without relying on an online-only placeholder.
  3. Review which folders and account you are synchronizing. Record that configuration before changing it.
  4. Choose the narrow action you need: a temporary pause, a folder selection change, or unlinking the PC. Do not delete synchronized files as a substitute.

Separate a sync problem from a network block

If OneDrive stopped working immediately after a blocker rule, investigate the rule before resetting the app or moving folders. Keep the original directory structure until you know which copy is authoritative. A successful folder rename is not proof that important files have been backed up.

Questions and answers

Is unlinking the same as deleting cloud files?

No. They are different operations; review the OneDrive instructions before removing data.

Can an online-only placeholder serve as my independent backup?

No. Verify that the required file contents are actually available in the backup you plan to rely on.
